Colombia Family Office Aviation

Family offices that look after families in Colombia, and US families with homes and relatives in Colombia, call us for travel that rarely follows one pattern. We work with whoever runs the family’s schedule, whether that is a travel manager, an executive assistant or a family member.

A year of family travel

A typical year might include a principal flying from Bogota to Miami for meetings, the family flying from Miami or New York to Cartagena between December and April, children coming home from school abroad for the year-end vacation, and a summer trip to Madrid. Staff and extra luggage sometimes travel on a separate flight.

One advisor handles the family’s trips from one request to the next. We keep the family’s preferences on file, including the aircraft size they are comfortable in, catering requests and who receives the itinerary, so a new request does not have to start from scratch.

Pets often travel with the family. We are very pet friendly, but not all aircraft owners are. Make sure to let us know about your pet prior to contracting. Pets entering Colombia have their own paperwork, so tell us early.

Backup when your own aircraft is out of service

If the family owns an aircraft and it is in scheduled maintenance, or becomes unavailable because of a mechanical problem, we can arrange a charter aircraft of a similar size for the trips already on the calendar, subject to scheduling and aircraft availability. Tell us how many people are flying, how much luggage they are bringing and where they are going, and we will come back with options.

Privacy for the family

We only share passenger names and itineraries with the operator and the crew assigned to the flight. If the trip is confidential and requires extra discretion, tell your advisor when you first call, and we will handle it that way from the start.

Flights within Colombia

Flights between two Colombian cities are flown by Colombian charter operators certified by the Aerocivil, Colombia’s civil aviation authority. If the family’s plans include a leg inside the country after arriving from abroad, your advisor will talk you through the options. For the international flights, you can see the aircraft sizes we work with on our passenger charter page.

Vetting Behind Every Trip

Every operator, aircraft, and crew goes through our internal due diligence before we present any options. Our internal standards meet or exceed what the FAA requires:

  • FAR Part 135 charter operators for traditional private aircraft, or FAR Part 121 for airliner-size and group trips (or the foreign equivalent on international legs)
  • Operator subscription to Wyvern and ARGUS reviewed where the operator participates.
  • Pilot experience and operator incident history reviewed before we recommend an aircraft.
  • Fewer than 60 brokers worldwide hold Premium Wyvern Broker Member status, and Air Charter Advisors is one of them.

Colombia-Specific Patterns We Plan Around

Most international private flights into Colombia arrive at Bogota’s El Dorado International or Medellin’s Jose Maria Cordova International in Rionegro, and Cartagena also takes international flights. Flights between two Colombian cities are flown by Colombian charter operators certified by the Aerocivil, Colombia’s civil aviation authority. Bogota and Medellin sit high in the Andes, so the operator plans the aircraft and the load with the altitude in mind. October and November usually bring the heaviest rain to the Andes, the hurricane season from June through November can affect San Andres and the Caribbean coast, and the weeks from early December to mid-January and Semana Santa book up first. The routing and any fuel stop on a long trip are confirmed with the operator before you book.
